A Rant About Paid Traffic

org-v-paidThis post is going to be kind of blunt, more like a rant than anything.
About paid traffic and how retarded I think it is – most of the time.
It started around the time I launched Empower Network.
I had people coming up to me, and asking questions like:
“What does the sales page convert at?”
To which I would respond “Well ya know, it converts at about 3% with cold traffic”.
The responses would range from anger to congratulations.
What I learned was few people knew anything about Network Marketing.
As the company grew, my inbox would get flooded with even more dumb questions. Most of them would be along the lines of asking me where I bought traffic from.
“Which traffic converts best with the sales video?”
The truth is, I’ve never actually run a paid traffic campaign successfully. I made all my money with blogging, and now pay marketers to run traffic for me.
The reason people get pissed off with this business isn’t because it doesn’t work, it’s because they don’t really understand it.
This online Network Marketing model is new, and people class it into ‘Internet Marketing’.
They treat it like a conversions business.
They treat it like a typical offer in a niche market.
Network Marketing isn’t like Internet Marketing. It’s almost impossible for large numbers of people to predictably buy high volumes of traffic to a sales page and create predictable results.
I don’t give a crap how many funnels you build or how you’ve got the best traffic ever, you just can’t build big teams from paid traffic.
It’s because this isn’t a normal conversions business.
So I’ll let you in on a little secret. I don’t even think the sales video has anything to do with the conversions.
The conversions vary from person to person, with the exact same traffic sources.
Isn’t that, interesting?
So you get a few types of people.
Most newbies will get online and want everything for nothing. They want a page that converts highly, and a way to get cheap traffic that converts.
That’s the secret, right?
Nope – the truth is all the top people inside Empower Network aren’t there because they have access to cheap traffic.
The secret is, it’s down to you.
It’s all in the pre-frame.
What you expose your prospects to before you show them the business.
Marketers who convert their paid traffic into sales have a killer pre-frame.
A page or video they send people to after they opt-in, that gives value and THEN sends people to the sales presentation.
A sales page will always have a kind of ‘base conversion rate’ which isn’t useful for paid traffic, and that’s the truth.
Expecting to make money by getting paid traffic to a duplicate Squeeze page that goes to a default sales video is a fast route to nowhere.
It just doesn’t work that way, unless you use blogging. With blogging you give value upfront which is like the pre-frame page, and people will opt-in to the default Squeeze pages and buy from the default sales video.
It’s not because the pages and video convert highly (although the video for Empower Network may convert higher than anything else in the industry), it’s because you’re giving value to people first, establishing rapport and then selling to them.
Blogging isn’t as sexy as the idea of paid traffic.
But the idea of paid traffic is flawed.
Getting paid traffic to convert into sales and be profitable requires skills. It requires you to create your own content, your own pre-frame page or video and your own email follow-up sequence.
If your stuff isn’t good, it doesn’t work.
Which is why so many beginners get online and waste thousands of dollars on paid traffic.
Then they blame the company and the sales video because ‘it doesn’t convert’.
Well it converts for other people, damnit!
There’s a difference.
They learnt the skills, they give value and pre-frame the offer. They sell themselves, they’re attractive marketers and people want to join them.
That’s why they make money with paid traffic.
It doesn’t really matter where the traffic comes from, or if it costs $0.50 a click or $1 a click.
What matters is having a custom marketing funnel and follow-up system…
…and it has to be executed well.
Otherwise you’re just wasting your resources.
It’s why I shake my head when everyone thinks they have a traffic problem or the sales video is why they’re not making money.
Often they jump to a new shiny object. New opportunities will always convert higher for a short time, which is why many people join them and mail them until they’re not ‘HOT’ anymore.
At which point they abandon their team and join a new deal, and slam their list again.
Never solving their real problem, which is learning some skills like selling and communicating with their list.
You don’t ever have a traffic problem.
Your only problem is you don’t know how to sell, follow-up with your list and convert subscribers into sales.
Buying paid traffic is dumb, unless you are confident in your ability to convert leads into sales.
Which, by the way; very people can do in big numbers.
Otherwise- blog daily.
Start with the 21 day blogging challenge.
You can stop being a wussy and put in the effort now, learn the skills and reap the rewards a little later.
It’s a breakthrough principle called delayed gratification.
If you spend your money on paid traffic without developing the skills first – just don’t whine like a little baby when it takes you 6 months to never to get a return on your investment.
You can’t build big teams with paid traffic.
It doesn’t work that way.
If you really want to, you can learn how to make paid advertising pay. But it’s going to take you a long time and it probably won’t be duplicatable.
If something is complex or difficult, it rarely duplicates.
If it doesn’t duplicate, the only way you’ll make money is from personal sales.
Ignoring the whole point of Network Marketing.

Agreed… Only paid traffic I do now days is traffic that directs people to a video I have done on Facebook and even that is hard to duplicate for the average person. I have seen soo many people lose money buying clicks that I’m to the point I tell people to stay away from “Clicks” or “Solo Ads”… Those are a complete waste now days!

Love this post. The reason I joined this business is Organic Traffic. It’s not because I am cheap it’s because the only way to build a business that is going to be around for a long while is if you build it on relationships – people buy from people who like people – so it takes a little longer – if you treat your readers well and provide them with material that helps them, makes them smile and even brings a tear to their eye – you are on your way to building a foundation. It is that simple – and the “sales” part will take care of itself – with a little help from your sales funnels.

I am so glad that you are actively blogging again and sharing with the EN family. I always get value. I was “pitched” another opportunity only yesterday. 3 hours of skype, 45 minutes after I told him I really needed to go, and he is back this morning asking if which “level” I was going to buy. Sounded pretty good, was actually considering it. Then I realized that EVERYTHING he was offering for the low sum of $20,000, I already have as a black card member. Excellent “rant” Dave. Skills, skills, skills. Man, we’ve got sucked into that click buying do nothing kind of “marketing” at the beginning. Until one is getting serious about their business and serious about learning some skills, one will make someone else rich. Learn, do, teach. Might sound corny, but it works.

Great post David. Blogging daily is something that anyone can do and (what is also very important) it can work for weeks, months or even years ahead. What I heard few days ago is that every blog post is like real estate on the internet and I totally agree with this.
I did many paid traffic campaigns and thanks to some of them I earned money and what I know is this:
If someone starts and wants to pay for traffic, a lot better strategy is blogging daily and promote created posts. I started in 2007 with my first blog (and few months later I created another) and thanks to this I build my frist 2 lists and attract a lot of customers so it works 🙂

I couldn’t agree with you more. I have been all in with Empower Network for 2 1/2 years now.No matter what I am doing even suffering with Sever COPD/emphysema There comes times when I end up in the hospital, most of last year to start with All year I was in the hospital. 7 days in one hospital on full life support, My husband took on the whole hospital for me and had me taken to a hospital with a Pulmonary Doctor. Where I spend another 7 days on full life support. The minute that I come out of the breathing machine they put me on I don’t have the fancy name for it. I start asking where is my computer so I can get my blog posts done. I just spent December 30th-January 3rd in the hospital with pneumonia Even before I got into the ambulance, I made sure my laptop was in my brief case so if I had a chance I could get my blog post done for the day! My poor husband is in a state of panic because I have to stop and make sure my laptop paper and pen or pencil. are all ready to go.It does n’ t matter to me I signed a contract guaranteeing that I would get my blog post done for how every many days in a row. It is hard to believe my poor husband hasn’t run out the door We’ve been married for 34 years now trust me through thick and thin. He’s been at my side no matter what it is I was doing. When he can’t go with me I go with some friends that’s always then I do get into trouble! In Miami I went with a couple lady friends who couldn’t be bothered to help me carry all my equipment to the event so as they are running to get to the event and I am struggling to keep up The first night I still remember as Dave Wood was walking off stage I was being taken away in an ambulance.I refused to go to the hospital my husband’s greatest fear was that would happen when he wasn’t with me and sure enough I had to call him as they are loading me into an ambulance telling him in New York I am in Miami and had 2 heart attacks.I am not a wussie I do everything in my power to get my blog post done.

Tremendous post Dave and good to see you blogging. I have many years of Sales experience and it’s true that building Relationships are Key when driving traffic and list building. I was selling people face to face in there home and successful doing it. So yes building relationships and providing value is were it’s at. People will buy from you if they trust, respect and see value in you and your product or service. But I also feel that All Traffic is Cold Traffic whether it comes from Solo Ads, PPC, PPV or even Blogging etc. Why? Because people don’t know who your are as a person. Blogging my help a little with relationship building cause we consider it our home’s on the net. And of course some free traffic if a person gets Great at blogging. But relationship building and providing value can also be done using Hangouts and Webinars. That’s why you see marketers doing them all the time. Also, I know from personal experience that depending on one source of Traffic is Never a Good Idea cause if something happens, then your business dies over night. You always want to have different streams of traffic coming in if you can. It stabilizes your business. Any experienced marketer will tell you this. And if they don’t then there just Full of It! However, what every way you drive traffic, the Relationship has to be built first no matter what.

very informative post here David. I admit I learned this the hard way. More people need to see this post and understand that unless you have the skills to create your own content, funnels and follow up systems, that they should keep their money in their pockets.

Thanks Dave, I juined EN a while ago and was told, forget blogging just but traffic.. (From him) lol.. Then pay someone to blog for your (from philapnes).. 2 very big mistakes.. Most philapinoes don’t know what to blog about or write good english.. And as I suspected all the traffic I bought was wasted. I always said blogging was the most important thing to ‘build a brand’ and have people know like and trust you’ then send traffic to my blogs or value videos which end up later in sales.. I have very little time alongside running and electrical business on my own. So I totally get why people jump into traffic, thinking they will blog later once some income comes in and they can work less hours on their business or job.. I agree from experience it does not work.. And I won’t be back in the business until I can commit to blogging every day, making real value videos and my own courses. You need to be seen as a leader / expert.. There are thousands of leaders to join so why join a newbi that just buys some traffic and doesn’t even sell himself? Or her self..

I totally agree with you, I have been blogging for over 4 years and its where the majority of my leads and sales originate. The best part is posts you have made in the past can continue to work for you in the future. Paid marketing is a straight up crap shoot if your brand new, as there is so much to understand..blogging is the smartest thing you can do. Love this post Dave. Thanks for sharing.

If paid traffic does not work for empower how is it that four million dollar earners did all paid traffic and no blogging that I am aware of ( Vick = all kinds of paid traffic) Paulo= (solo ads) Shaq = (only solo ads) and Chuck Marshall = (magazine ads) ???

Four out of 15 million dollar earners.
Vick did not make his million here through paid traffic. Paid traffic added to what he did, but his $3 million + was not made that way.
Shaqir did not make most of his money through paid traffic either. That is what moved personal numbers – not most of his commissions. Most of his money was made through relationships.
Paulo – I honestly don’t know, and I’m not sure he is a million dollar earner yet – although I believe he is close.
Chuck Marshall also doesn’t make his money through magazine ads, he makes his money via systems and processes that involve a team of people promoting. It’s different.
If you’re looking for an answer – the answer always lies in the people you’re working through.
That’s all I’ll say.

Had I read this post 2 years ago, I would have had 700 more blog posts, $100,000 of paid advertising expenses back in my pocket, and probably already be over $1M in income because of the higher conversions of people joining our team and upgrading!
We’re getting all of that squared away here in 2015 … along with our team!

this is the eye opener for me! i tried to do the paid traffic sometimes and the conversion was so poor!!! now i came to understand why that is!
My pre-framing was poor!
but in building the relationship with the list from the paid traffic i did! i can see people starting to understand my visions, are able to see the value i offer to them daily via my emails, video, and bog posts!
and Also I was failing in determining who is my Avatar, and hence fail to communicate my message to the frustrations and problems of my leads!
I have observed you David, Chris, Lawrence, Chuck, Mack, Vick, Tony get higher conversions with how you pre-frame your ideas to solve others problems and frustrations!
And with KALATU here i think, i going to solve the frustrations and problems of at leas 500 new people this year!
I will teach, demonstrate, and help my leads to overcome their struggles and frustrations for free and provide them tools to make it possible for them! tools like KALATU, Top Producer Formula, Mass Influence Formula plus other great ideas i am learning everyday!
